WORLD HERITAGE DAY
In 1983, the Assembly of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), created under UNESCO, proclaimed April 18 as the International Day for the Protection of Monuments and Sites, with the aim of drawing public attention to the issues of protecting and preserving the world cultural heritage. Since then, the entire civilized world has celebrated this significant date. And our country can rightfully be proud of its achievements in this area.
The archaeological and architectural monuments preserved on the territory of Turkmenistan, many of which were witnesses to the seething life along the ancient trade routes of the Great Silk Road, are able to tell a lot to our contemporaries and descendants. The Turkmen land, due to its geographical location, has become the main bridge between the world of the East and the world of the West. Important international trade routes from China to the Middle East through the cities of Amul, Merv, Sarakhs, Abiverd, Nisa, from the countries of the Middle East to Rus' through Dehistan and Kunya-Urgench, to India through Zemm (modern Atamurat) passed through the territory of Turkmenistan in ancient times and the Middle Ages.
The monuments of Ancient Merv and Kunya-Urgench, the Parthian fortresses of Nisa are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Turkmenistan, in cooperation with UNESCO, takes effective measures to study, protect and carefully preserve historical, cultural and natural monuments on the territory of our country.
