THE SESSION OF THE INTERDEPARTMENTAL COMMISSION OF TURKMENISTAN ON THE ISSUES OF THE CASPIAN SEA WAS HELD IN THE MFA

On October 3, 2020, the session of the Interdepartmental Commission of Turkmenistan on the issues of the Caspian Sea was held in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan in renewed composition.

As is known, the day before during the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, the Head of State signed the Resolution, according to which the composition of the Interdepartmental Commission of Turkmenistan on the issues of the Caspian Sea was determined.

In accordance with the instructions of the President of Turkmenistan, the fundamental issues related to the preparations to the Sixth Summit of the heads of the Caspian states to be held in Turkmenistan were considered during the meeting.

The corresponding Deputy Chairmen of the Cabinet of Ministers, heads of relevant ministries and profile departments of Turkmenistan took part in the session. 

The Deputy Chairmen of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan R.Meredov noted that under the prudent leadership of the President of Turkmenistan, the country is invariably holds the initiative position on the development of balanced resolutions of the issues on the Caspian. It was stated that Turkmenistan played an important role in the development of legal-contractual foundation of cooperation on the Caspian Sea and this process is continuing in collaboration with all the Caspian states in the framework of international law, taking into consideration the ecological component.  

Accordingly, the Minister reminded about the signing of the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea in August 2018 in Aktau, the draft of which was initiated in Turkmenistan back in 2002.  He underlined that Turkmenistan will put further necessary efforts on the promotion of mutually beneficial cooperation on the Caspian based on the principles of mutual respect.This pertains to all spheres – economy, ecology, security, transport and others.  At the same time, in accordance with the ecological diplomacy of the country, it is pertinent to pay special attention to the issues of climate change, development of activities in the framework of green economy.     

The Head of MFA told about the necessity of thorough preparation to the Sixth Summit of the heads of the Caspian states.  He voiced the priority courses of work in the given direction.  In addition to the serious approach to the organizational issues, he told about the necessity of thorough preparations to the arrangement of relevant legal and economic mechanisms for the expansion of the basis and spectrum of cooperation.    

Turkmenistan intends to continue active work in the given sphere with the aim of providing peace, security and stability in the region, strengthening of friendship ties, good-neighborliness and collaboration between the coastline states and their peoples.
