A delegation of Turkmenistan, headed by A. Sazakov, Chairman of the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan, is participating in the 77th session of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), taking place from October 12 to 16 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

The session is being held in the year marking the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, which laid a solid foundation for strengthening the modern global system of protection for people who have been forcibly displaced.

During the general plenary session, the head of the Turkmen delegation delivered a speech, paying particular attention to the global initiative put forward by President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov to declare 2028 the “Year of International Law.” It was noted that this far-reaching initiative is aimed at strengthening the rule of law in the modern era and enhancing the effectiveness of states in fulfilling their international obligations.

It was also emphasized that during the implementation of the National Action Plan to End Statelessness in Turkmenistan for 2019–2024, more than 32,000 people were granted Turkmen citizenship, while over 5,000 people received residence permits in Turkmenistan. As an important continuation of this policy, on the eve of the celebration of the 35th anniversary of the country's independence, 146 foreign citizens were granted residence permits in Turkmenistan in accordance with a Presidential Decree.

The Turkmen side reaffirmed its readiness to further strengthen international cooperation in the field of migration, expand the legal and contractual framework for cooperation, develop digital exchanges of information and experience, and participate in the implementation of international programmes and initiatives in the areas of sustainable development and humanitarian cooperation.
